London, November 15, 2011 NOA – The search is on to find 200 volunteers to manage the only London Ambassadors ‘pod’ to be exclusively run by young people during the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The quest will take place across schools in five of the Olympic Host boroughs – Tower Hamlets, Waltham Forest, Hackney, Newham and Greenwich – between 21 and 25 November.
The selection events will see the young people taking part in a series of group activities and tasks which will help to assess if the young people have the qualities needed to be a London Ambassador, NOA.al News Agency reports.
The young people will be selected from a pool of over 300 14-19 year olds who are taking part in Rep London, an employability and volunteering project which builds the aspirations and skills of young people. Rep London is run by the East London Business Alliance (ELBA ) and funded by the National Lottery through the Olympic Lottery Distributor.
Rep London has teamed up with the Greater London Authority (GLA) to ensure that young people from East London get the chance to use the skills they have learnt as part of Rep London by becoming London Ambassadors. The London Ambassadors programme is spearheaded by the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson and will see an army of 8,000 volunteers located at 40 ‘pod’ sites across London during Games time.
Boris Johnson, who launched the programme last year, said: “When the world descends on our doorstep in 2012 I want an army of passionate, warm ambassadors to welcome our guests and this must include young Londoners from across the capital. This ambassador pod in London’s iconic Spitalfields Market will be a chance for young people to improve their skills, show off their London knowledge and offer our visitors a unique perspective on our great city. Being involved in the 2012 Games will be a once in a lifetime experience and I urge young Londoners to get involved in any way that they can.”
Rt. Hon. Dame Janet Paraskeva, Chair of the Olympic Lottery Distributor said:
‘It is vital that the young people taking part in Rep London get the chance to put the skills they have learnt into practice. The OLD is delighted that National Lottery funding for the Pod will give these young people an opportunity to do this through high profile roles as London Ambassadors during the 2012 Games.’
